Halflife 2 is a fantastic game, but it comes at a cost. One cost in particular is your account's password - for some reason Valve uses an encryption algorithm that doesn't even exist! This has been the case since Halflife 2 was released in 2004, and with no workaround available until now. In this blog post I'll be explaining how you can reset the Steam login password to something more secure than "halflife2reloadedpassword202". As many of you know, I've recently been looking into ways of backing up our data on Internet sites to protect against the possibility of going out of business or forced closure by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Some of you will remember my blog post http://www.juggler.no/blog/?p=122 where I suggested we could use the system Gogrid to backup our data to a peer-to-peer (P2P) network like KaZaA, eDonkey or Napster (!). This would give us an effective backup without relying on any third party service, ISP or server. So, that got me thinking. I've been a heavy user of KaZaA for a long time and I know that KaZaA has a feature called "shared storage" which works similar to Gogrid. With shared storage you can share things like images, music and movies etc with your friends without having to send files via email or IM services. The files are shared on the KaZaA network allowing anyone who wants to download them from anywhere in the world. So what I figured was this: If KaZaA can share files over a P2P network, why can't we use KaZaA to back up our data? By creating a large folder on KaZaA and then sharing it with the rest of the network, we would have a backup that anyone could download from anywhere in the world. I decided that this would be my next project - to create a script that would not only share Gnutella storage but also update our own website when new articles have been added. The problem is this: If you want to update your website via P2P, you need a tracker. A tracker is a central server that keeps track of all peers and their IP-addresses. So I set out to create my own tracker. To create my own tracker I would need a unique IP address - something that KaZaA doesn't offer. Fortunately, KaZaA can be configured to use a proxy which gives you an IP-address that isn't unique but is at least available on KaZaA and can be used for this kind of thing. Fortunately we already have a proxy running here at Juggle: Our IRC bot, Tigerbot Server: tigerbot.juggler. cfa1e77820
